NEW PROGRAM: Rear Admiral [Ret.] James Carey, Future Leaders Chairman, announced a new Washington Scholars Internship Program focused on America’s wounded military veterans.The first selectee for this program is Bo Prosch of Wake Forest University, an Armyveteran of BOTH Iraq and Afghanistan, who is interning on the staff of Senator Ensign of Nevada.

Jim Prendergast Elected to Future Leaders for America Foundation Board

Jim has been nominated to serve on the Future Leaders for American Foundation Board of Directors. The vote to confirm his election was completed today and we are pleased to inform you that Jim has now been duly elected to that Board of Directors position. From his days as an undergraduate at Cornell University to his rapid rise in the government relations profession in Washington, DC, Jim as been on a steep up-glide-slope in recognition of his exception leadership and managerial talents. For more on Jim’s background, we’ve put together some notes on his career for your information, as follows:

Jim Prendergast is one of the youngest Partners at DCI Group, a leading Washington public affairs firm. He provides both public affairs and campaign management counsel to corporate clients. Previously, he directed DCI Group’s in-house marketing and business development division, Business Growth Strategies.

Prior to joining DCI Group, Mr. Prendergast was National Director for Field Membership Services for the National Association of Manufacturers in Washington, D.C. Before coming to Washington, he had served as the NAM’s Senior Regional Manager for the Southeast and previously, the Midwest, where he coordinated NAM’s outside-the-beltway lobbying activities in 10 states. Mr. Prendergast held several positions with Citizens for a Sound Economy from 1993 through 1996 and worked for then Senator Alfonse D’Amato (R-New York) in 1992.

From the Future Leaders for America Foundation Board of Directors, we say “Welcome Aboard, Jim”. Jim’s fine leadership and proven management skills will assist with the management and oversight of the Washington Scholars Internship Program as a program of the Future Leaders for America Foundation. Our on-going efforts to put the next generation of leadership in place to ensure continuity of our programs and operations in the 21st Century continues to move ever forward.

Washington Scholars Summer 2008 Application Deadline

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington Scholars Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2008 internship program in Washington, DC. Application materials and additional information are available at: www.washingtonscholars.org. The application deadline has been extended to March 1, 2008.

The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program is one of the premier internship programs in the Nation’s Capital. Each summer, approximately 30 outstanding university students are accepted into the 8-10 week program. WSFP provides training and technical assistance to university students who have demonstrated significant leadership skills and endeavor to work in public service, public policy, law or the United States armed forces. WSFP places Scholars in fellowships, internships, and mentoring partnerships that are structured to provide opportunities to develop leadership skills and further their understanding of public policy. In addition, Scholars attend various educational workshops, conferences, youth leadership events, mentoring and social events.
The Program will provide financial assistance to Scholars that accept volunteer internships in government, public policy, media, public relations, and non-profit organizations by awarding scholarships. The scholarships must be used exclusively for travel, study, or other similar purposes.
The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program was founded by Rear Admiral (Ret.) James J. Carey. Admiral Carey was Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission under President George H.W. Bush and was a Federal Maritime Commissioner under President Ronald Reagan. He is currently Chairman of the National Defense PAC and sits on the Boards of several corporations, including American Business Development Group.

The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program is operated by Future Leaders for America Foundation. The Foundation is a public charity exempt from tax under Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3). In accordance with the existing federal tax law, the Foundation is nonpartisan and does not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office by publishing or distributing statements, or in any other way. No substantial part of the activities of the Foundation’s activities involve the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation.

Board Member McManus Elected Vice Chairman of FLfA

Washington, DC: January 8, 2008 — The Future Leaders for America Foundation Chairman today announced that Mr. Brian McManus, Board Member and Treasurer of the Foundation, has been elected to the position of Vice Chairman of the Foundation. Future Leaders Chairman, Rear Admiral [Ret.] James J. Carey, stated “Brian McManus has done outstanding work for the foundation over the past two years, and has become a critical member of our management team. Since his election to the Board of Directors last year, his dedication to the Foundation has proven to be a major source of inspiration for our entire Board. And his service as Treasurer of the Foundation has provided his expertise as a tax lawyer that has served to make our operations even more professional. I now look to Brian’s election as Vice Chairman of the Board to provide me with a strong right arm in the foundation’s management, administration, and operation as we seek to expand the number of interns we support each year.”

Future Leaders for America Foundation is an IRS approved 501.c.3 public foundation whose primary focus is it’s Washington Scholars national public policy internship programs in Washington, DC. Washington Scholars interns have come from 22 different states plus Canada, and have served in 17 different federal agencies and organizations in America’s capitol city, including the U. S. Congress, The White House, and the prestigious Heritage Foundation. The Foundation is also an approved participant in the federal government’s annual Combined Federal Campaign.

Washington Scholar Grad Jonathan Kim Joins Network Federal

Earlier this week, we congratulated Jonathan Sih and his new job and today we have learned that Jonathan Kim [UMass Grad] also has a new position with a company called Network Federal in DC, with offices also Greenbelt, MD where he’ll be working. Network Federal works with government contractors selling and reselling to the federal government through the GSA schedule. One more Washington Scholar is moving up the national public policy career ladder here in the nation’s capitol. Plus in Jonathan’s own words “I truly believe that my public service experience through my USAF service AND my Washington Scholar internship in the Congress is what gave me the ‘edge’ in getting this job, since there were a lot of other candidates that interviewed for this position”.

Washington Scholar Jonathan Sih Moves to Russ Reid

Special congratulations to Washington Scholar Grad Jonathan Sih, who we’ve just learned is moving up the career ladder. Jon did his Washington Scholar internship on the staff of Congresswoman Judy Biggert of Illinois, and did such a good job there [also where Washington Scholar Grad Zach Cikanek is the Press Secretary] that he was hired onto the staff full time to begin his national public policy career path. That was a year and a half ago. Today we learned that Jon has been hired to be a Legislative Assistant at the firm of Russ Reid here in Washington, DC—— the firm specializes in Congressional Relations and the Congressional Appropriations process as it applies to not-for-profit organizations. So our first New Year 2008 congratulations go to Jonathan Sih of the University of Texas as he begins to move up the career ladder in this, his national public policy career and professional involvement.
