Washington Scholars Summer 2008 Application Deadline

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington Scholars Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2008 internship program in Washington, DC. Application materials and additional information are available at: www.washingtonscholars.org. The application deadline has been extended to March 1, 2008.

The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program is one of the premier internship programs in the Nation’s Capital. Each summer, approximately 30 outstanding university students are accepted into the 8-10 week program. WSFP provides training and technical assistance to university students who have demonstrated significant leadership skills and endeavor to work in public service, public policy, law or the United States armed forces. WSFP places Scholars in fellowships, internships, and mentoring partnerships that are structured to provide opportunities to develop leadership skills and further their understanding of public policy. In addition, Scholars attend various educational workshops, conferences, youth leadership events, mentoring and social events.
The Program will provide financial assistance to Scholars that accept volunteer internships in government, public policy, media, public relations, and non-profit organizations by awarding scholarships. The scholarships must be used exclusively for travel, study, or other similar purposes.
The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program was founded by Rear Admiral (Ret.) James J. Carey. Admiral Carey was Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission under President George H.W. Bush and was a Federal Maritime Commissioner under President Ronald Reagan. He is currently Chairman of the National Defense PAC and sits on the Boards of several corporations, including American Business Development Group.

The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program is operated by Future Leaders for America Foundation. The Foundation is a public charity exempt from tax under Internal Revenue Code § 501(c)(3). In accordance with the existing federal tax law, the Foundation is nonpartisan and does not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office by publishing or distributing statements, or in any other way. No substantial part of the activities of the Foundation’s activities involve the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation.

Future Leaders for America Foundation is an IRS approved 501.c.3 public foundation whose primary focus is it’s Washington Scholars national public policy internship programs in Washington, DC. Washington Scholars interns have come from 22 different states plus Canada, and have served in 17 different federal agencies and organizations in America’s capitol city, including the U. S. Congress, The White House, and the prestigious Heritage Foundation. The Foundation is also an approved participant in the federal government’s annual Combined Federal Campaign.

At Morgan Lewis, Mr. McManus’ practice focuses on civil and criminal tax controversies, including examinations and administrative appeals before the Internal Revenue Service and federal tax litigation. He handles a broad range of tax disputes including individual, partnership, and corporate audits; tax shelter promoter investigations; audits involving listed transactions; transferee liability cases; information reporting penalties; TEFRA procedural disputes; and various state and local tax issues. Mr. McManus also advises U.S. financial institutions on withholding and information reporting requirements, counsels corporate clients on compliance issues and internal investigations, and is experienced with fraud and white collar matters. He has litigated in U.S. Tax Court and U.S. District Court.

My purpose with this message is, through you, to try to reach as many federal employees as possible, either through you or your friends and colleagues and associates that work for the federal government. Each year, the U. S. Government conducts it’s own annual charity drive, called “The Combined Federal Campaign” [CFC], so named and structured to replace the countless charities that used to show up every year seeking funds from federal employees, with this single annual drive that then divides the donations among all 4000+ charities. The Future Leaders for America Foundation, which operates the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program, IS an approved and qualified charity within the Combined Federal Campaign [CFC] and thus is one of the 4000+ charities that shares in the donations that federal employees make to CFC. The 2007 Combined Federal Campaign starts this month and continues till the end of this year. More importantly, any funds that donors specifically designate for Future Leaders [Donation ID # 12257] go 100% to them for use in conducting the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program.
